Metformin and renal injury protection
نویسنده
چکیده
Implication for health policy/practice/research/medical education: Metformin protects against tubular injury by modulation of oxidative stress on the tubules and restoring the biochemical alterations. While in diabetes, glycosuria causes tubular cell injury. Furthermore metformin is able to protect podocytes in diabetic nephropathy. These findings may suggest the clinical use of metformin in the prevention of diabetic nephropathy. A R T I C L E I N F O

Metformin Prevents Renal Stone Formation through an Antioxidant Mechanism In Vitro and In Vivo
Oxidative stress is a causal factor and key promoter of urolithiasis associated with renal tubular epithelium cell injury. The present study was designed to investigate the preventive effects of metformin on renal tubular cell injury induced by oxalate and stone formation in a hyperoxaluric rat model. MTT assays were carried out to determine the protection of metformin from oxalate-induced cyto...

Recently, we conducted a preclinical investigation to find the ameliorative properties of metformin on renal biochemical and histologic alterations of gentamicininduced kidney damage in male Wistar rats (1). In this investigation, attenuation of gentamicin-induced acute kidney injury was found. Likewise, Taheri et al. conducted a study on the effects of metformin on renal tubular cells after un...

متن کاملMetformin decreases high-fat diet-induced renal injury by regulating the expression of adipokines and the renal AMP-activated protein kinase/acetyl-CoA carboxylase pathway in mice.
Metabolic syndrome is characterized by insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension. These metabolic changes contribute to the development of obesity-induced kidney injury. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a ubiquitous enzyme that is involved in the cellular metabolic response to metabolic stress. Metformin, an AMPK activator, has been reported to exert a protective effect against no...

Hypothesis Implication for health policy/practice/research/medical education: The combination of metformin and ginger extract may be more effective for the control of diabetes and may have additive protective efficacy on diabetic nephropathy. N ephropathy of the diabetes is one of the most important complications of this illness. Recently, much attention has been made toward the possible kidney...
